Principles of Operation
Inspection and Verification

Verify the customer concern by operating the vehicle to duplicate the condition.
-
If the inspection reveals an obvious concern(s) that can be readily identified, repair as necessary.

Install new components if a transmission fluid leak is found in any of the transmission cooling components.
-
If the cause is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to the Symptom Chart.

PINPOINT TEST A: TRANSMISSION OVERHEATING
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
-
Plugged or damaged transmission fluid cooler or transmission fluid cooler tubes
-
Inspect the transmission fluid cooler
and the transmission fluid cooler tubes for damage or plugging. INSTALL
new components as necessary.REFER to: Transmission Fluid Cooler Tubes -
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) (307-02B Transmission Cooling -
Automatic Transmission – HF45, Removal and Installation).

Active grille shutter stuck in closed position
-
Resolve any faults with the active grille shutter. REFER to: Active
Grille Shutter (501-02 Front End Body Panels, Diagnosis and Testing).

System leaks
-
Inspect transmission fluid cooler and
transmission fluid cooler tubes for leaks. SERVICE as required.

Internal transmission concerns
-
Inspect the transmission fluid pump and filter assembly. REFER to:

Inspect internal transmission components for indications of
overheating. REFER to: Transmission - Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Disassembly).
REFER to: Transmission Case Cover (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission – HF45, Removal and Installation).

- Damaged transmission cooler or cooler tubes
- Inoperative active grille shutter
- Transmission fluid leak
- Internal transmission components
