DISASSEMBLY

Inspect the differential bearings for damage or excessive wear. Install new bearings if necessary.

Using special tools, remove the bearing.
Use Special Service Tool: 204-069

NOTE:
If the ring gear is replaced, a new transfer shaft must also be installed.
Check the differential assembly and the ring gear for damage.

Remove and discard the ring gear bolts.

Remove the ring gear.
ASSEMBLY
-
NOTE:
Do not torque the 4 ring gear bolts.
Hand-start 4 new ring gear bolts to align the holes in
the ring gear and the differential case. Evenly tighten the bolts to
seat the ring gear onto the differential case.

NOTE:
Tighten all 16 bolts in 2 stages.
Install the remaining new differential ring gear bolts and tighten all bolts.
Torque:
Stage 1:
24 lb.ft (33 Nm)
Stage 2:
60°

If the bearings were removed, install new bearings.

Remove the transmission case cover.

NOTE:
If servicing the RH (right-hand) tie rod, both bellows boots must be removed.
Remove the steering gear boot.
Refer to: Steering Gear Boot (211-02 Power Steering, Removal and Installation).
NOTICE:
Hold the steering gear rack while loosening the tie
rod. Failure to hold the rack securely could result in steering gear
damage.
