Principles of Operation

Torque Converter Clutch

For torque converter clutch operation,
REFER to: Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 8-Speed Automatic Transmission – 8F35/8F40, Description and Operation).

Symptom Possible Sources Action
  • TCC does not apply
  • Solenoid filter blocked to the TCC solenoid
  • INSTALL a new TCC solenoid.
    REFER to: Solenoid (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 8-Speed Automatic Transmission – 8F35/8F40, Removal and Installation).
  • TCC solenoid mechanically stuck off
  • INSTALL a new TCC solenoid.
    REFER to: Solenoid (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 8-Speed Automatic Transmission – 8F35/8F40, Removal and Installation).
  • TCC regulator valve stuck off
  • DISASSEMBLE, CLEAN and INSPECT the TCC regulator valve. If the bore or valve is damaged or if the spring is damaged or missing, INSTALL a new main control valve body.
    REFER to: Main Control Valve Body (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 8-Speed Automatic Transmission – 8F35/8F40, Overhaul).
  • Pump stator bushing and/or input shaft worn
  • REMOVE, CLEAN and INSPECT the pump assembly, the input shaft and the torque converter. If the pump stator bushing and/or the input shaft are worn, INSTALL a new pump assembly, input shaft and torque converter.

  • TCC APPLY hydraulic circuit blocked or leaking
  • DISASSEMBLE and INSPECT the transmission, main control and pump assembly passages for debris/blockage. CLEAN as necessary. INSPECT the TCC hydraulic circuits for leaks.

  • TCC friction material worn or damaged.
  • INSTALL a new torque converter. REFER to: Transmission (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 8-Speed Automatic Transmission – 8F35/8F40, Removal and Installation).
  • TCC always applied/stalls vehicle
  • TCC solenoid mechanically stuck on
  • INSTALL a new TCC solenoid.
    REFER to: Solenoid (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 8-Speed Automatic Transmission – 8F35/8F40, Removal and Installation).
  • TCC regulator valve stuck on
  • DISASSEMBLE, CLEAN and INSPECT the TCC regulator valve. If the bore or valve is damaged or if the spring is damaged or missing, INSTALL a new main control valve body.

  • TCC RELEASE hydraulic circuit blocked or leaking
  • DISASSEMBLE and INSPECT the transmission, main control and pump assembly passages for debris/blockage. CLEAN as necessary. INSPECT the TCC hydraulic circuits for leaks.

  • TCC welded or damaged.
  • INSTALL a new torque converter. REFER to: Transmission (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 8-Speed Automatic Transmission – 8F35/8F40, Removal and Installation).
  • TCC cycles, shudders or chatters
  • Incorrect Transmission Strategy programmed into the PCM / TCM
  • PERFORM transmission strategy download and the adaptive learning drive cycle.

  • TCC solenoid filter or seal damaged at TCC solenoid
  • INSTALL a new TCC solenoid.

  • TCC solenoid mechanically sticking
  • INSTALL a new TCC solenoid.
    REFER to: Solenoid (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 8-Speed Automatic Transmission – 8F35/8F40, Removal and Installation).
  • TCC regulator valve, springs, clips loose, stuck, binding, missing, misassembled
  • DISASSEMBLE, CLEAN and INSPECT the TCC regulator valve. If the bore or valve is damaged or if the spring is damaged or missing, INSTALL a new main control valve body.

  • TCC RELEASE/TCC APPLY hydraulic circuit blocked or leaking
  • DISASSEMBLE and INSPECT the transmission, main control and pump assembly for debris/blockage. CLEAN as necessary. INSPECT the TCC hydraulic circuits for leaks

  • TCC cycling/shudder/chatter
  • VERIFY the TCC is causing the concern. ATTEMPT to duplicate event while commanding the PID TCC_OSC OFF. If the concern cannot be duplicated while the TCC is commanded off the TCC may be worn or damaged. INSTALL a new torque converter.
